Hello District 4, We kicked off the 101st legislative session on Tuesday. The Governor delivered his state of the state address. The rest of the day was spent in meetings with constituents and other legislators.
Wednesday we heard from the Supreme Court and the Tribes. Wednesday night I attended the South Dakota Association of Rural Water Systems dinner and social event. It's rewarding to know these rural water systems are paying attention. The board members and managers are our always dependable and ready to serve people. Thursday night I attended the South Dakota Rural Electric dinner. Again, these board members and managers play such a critical role in our every day lives. Take a minute to thank them and all the employees involved in both our rural water systems and rural electric coops for what they do.
Thursday morning I was invited to address the South Dakota Association of Rural Water at their annual technical conference held in Pierre. The conversation centered on economic development and how AI infrastructure and data centers can add to the equation. I'm posting through a data center. We enjoy TV through subscription services through data centers. My antagonists post with reckless abandon on facebook, again through a data center. Precision ag, healthcare, national security, banking and on and on all through a data center. I can monitor a bull in Lyman County, on my phone, from Hamlin County, through a data center. Why don't we have any here? My HB 1005 creates a pathway for the entire state. Creating a tax load equivalent to all our bordering states, and policy that aligns us with more than 40 states. President Trump, our national representatives and local folks understand the value, not only locally, but nationwide and even globally this industry has. It's time to open South Dakota to an additional industry. Diversifying our economy and adding good jobs locally is part of a solution to many of our issues. Let's keep our kids here by giving them an additional chance at good rewarding work. It might not be right for all, but it might be right for some.
I'll take a minute to add, Jarvis Wipf has the best Christian outreach program in the Capitol, the Catacomb Caucus. I was lucky to attend his prayer service in the rotunda on Wednesday. It was a moving experience and reminded all of us that while we have fun here in our pursuits, all of our service is to God. Like a good Lutheran, I sat in the back row.
The committee and floor load was light this past week. We'll swim into it next week with the first "full" week.
